It was just supposed to be a reading…

On February 12, 2022, Jack & Kasey invited Isto and Hannah over for a reading of The Maids by Jean Genet. It was lovely — decked with wine and cheeses from our generous hosts; but informal (Isto was dressed as Pinocchio for a Shrek-themed birthday party).

Not long after, the gathering continued to… gather. And slowly but surely, it became clear we were doing a play.

But to do so required some form of organization and incorporation. It was our new Stage Manager, Maysie, who gave us our name: The Garret. In our second production, Isaac’s Eye, we gained our sixth member, Reagan, and shortly thereafter, Isto left the company to focus on other pursuits.

The Garret is referenced in The Maids, but speaks to the work we are all attracted to: something hidden, secret, musty, but filled with potential.
